BETH SHALOM of the BLUE HILLS

“Building Now and for the Future”

A BRIEF JEWISH  THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

  What is it about fire?

So dangerous when out of control and yet so useful when tamed.  It warms us.  It lights the way.  It cooks our food.  It helps us make utensils….but even more its ephemeral quality has the capacity to touch us deep within.

“And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him (Moshe) in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush; and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, but was not consumed.” (Exodus 3:2)

“And the LORD went before them (the Israelites) by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them the way (out of Egypt); and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; that they might go by day and by night: the pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night, departed not from before the people. (Exodus 13:21-22)

Maybe it’s because as warm blooded creatures we share a profound affinity with fire.  Just like one candle can light many others, so too can an embrace warm the heart and soul of another….and another.

“The lamp of the Lord is the spirit of human beings.” (Proverbs 20:27)  Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi
