“Building Now and for the Future”
A BRIEF JEWISH  THOUGHT  FOR THE WEEK

Burial of a Different Sort

Sometime next week – we’ll let you know the day and time once it is confirmed – we will have a ceremony at our new synagogue site to bury sacred books and texts (Siddurim, Chumashim, Hagaddot, etc) that are damaged or no longer in use.  Jewish Traditions has us treat these documents with the same respect as that of the human body – the vessel of flesh and bone that holds the Divine Spirit.  Our people have a long and strong attachment to books, especially those whose purpose it is to inspire us to live lives of goodness and holiness.  These books need to be buried because they got worn out from use.  They were treasures not to be enclosed, untouched in a protective glass case but rather meant to be turned even if, by accident, they were occasionally torn by hands big and small.  When they became unusable, they were set aside in a safe place – a Genizah* – and as a community we invested in new books to take their place.  The true final resting place for these Holy Texts and the messages they contain is not in the earth.  Their real destination is in the depths of our being.  Shabbat Shalom, RabbiB
