“Building Now and for the Future”

A BRIEF JEWISH THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Rounding Out Our Vacation

On our way back from Montreal, Alison, Micah and I topped off our trip by joining a JCC sponsored group of parents with young children for a Shabbat experience at the Cardigan Mountain Lodge in NH. http://www.outdoors.org/lodging/lodges/cardigan/ Most attendees were professional couples from Cambridge and Somerville in their late 30’s – early 40’s with one or two children under 6. Our Shabbat experience centered around an appreciation of creation: hiking to a waterfall, catching tadpoles and noticing different types of trees, leaves and bugs. We had a great time. At the final group get together, the JCC facilitator asked if anything we did left a strong impression. I knew my answer immediately – people are once again having babies. Sure enough a June 17th front page article in the Wall Street Journal supported my impression with an article entitled, “US birthrate exits post recession funk”. And just in case you didn’t know, the very first mitzvah in the entire Torah is “pru ur’vu” / “be fruitful and multiply”. This trend indeed is great news for the Jews. Shabbat Shalom, RabbiB
