A Shared Romp in the PARCC

Last week I asked one of the students in our Religious School how school was going.  He said, “Great, we are taking the PARCC tests.” You can’t study for this test.  Its purpose is to determine how much skill and knowledge has truly been absorbed and integrated up to a particular point in time.  It’s an assessment tool.  Judaism though doesn’t only want to know what has been learned during the course of a year, just as important, our Tradition wants to know what we have taught others.  The core value here is that learning in partnership with teaching acknowledges each person’s ability, at every stage of life, to offer of themselves to others…even the responsibility to do so.  As Rabbi Chanina said, “I have learned much from my teachers; more from my colleagues. But most of all – from my students.” (Babylonian Talmud, Ta’anit 7a)
