The members of Congregation Beth Shalom of the Blue Hills continually seek to demonstrate a communal agenda that reflects our priorities and values. One of these is a commitment to helping others in need. Now that we are blessed to have a spiritual home of our own, it is with this in mind that we have instituted our “Community Service Third-Thursday Mitzvah Program” which this year will include several projects: a winter clothing drive, tutoring elementary school children, English enrichment for immigrant adults, and helping seniors and the developmentally disabled during different holiday seasons. Others are planned and we are open to suggestions! The projects mostly take place at our Temple building on the third Thursday of every month while others are done at other times out in the community. This program is a way for us to put into practice the Jewish idea that “doing good deeds is an obligation”! All of our Mitzvah opportunities are open to volunteers from the wider community. We are proud and excited to be both a catalyst and place where good things happen.
At our “kickoff” Winter Clothing Drive in October more than thirty congregation members volunteered. Donations poured in from people throughout Milton and as a result we delivered over 40 extra large bags of clothing to Interfaith Social Services in Quincy. On December 15th, the congregation will partner with Father Bill’s/Mainspring of Quincy to provide 75 lunches for the homeless and under-served. In September a tutoring program started at Cunningham Elementary School and was extended in November to Collicot Elementary School. Similar projects are planned throughout 2017.
