“Cooking Culture” is the theme of this season’s Winter Movie Series of Cong. Beth Shalom of the Blue Hills, co-sponsored by the First Congregational Church of Milton, and open to the public. The opening film is “Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg” on Saturday evening, November 21st at 7:00 p.m., doors open at 6:45. The film will be screened in Huntington Hall of the First Congregational Church, 495 Canton Avenue, Milton, with entry at the accessible side door entrance.
“Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg” is the funny and surprising story of radio and television pioneer Gertrude Berg, the creator, principal writer and star of The Goldbergs. A popular radio show for 17 years, The Goldbergs became television’s very first character-driven domestic sitcom in 1949. It combined comedy and social commentary with Jewish characters, particularly matriarch Molly Goldberg, at the center. Gertrude Berg won the first ‘Best Actress’ Emmy Award. She also was a Tony Award winner on Broadway, and wrote a highly respected advice column.
This award-winning 2009 documentary was written, produced and directed by filmmaker Aviva Kempner, creating an “unforgettable portrait of the most famous woman in America you’ve never heard of: the trailblazing American cultural icon Gertrude Berg.”
The donation for admission to the film is $3.00/pp or two for $5.00 in advance, $4.00/pp at the door.
